Stroke Rehabilitation

When I first entered Prestonwood as a patient, having just undergone surgery to reduce fractures of my left femur and left scapula, I was in bad shape. Not only was I in intense physical pain, but also my mental condition was extremely negative – I was very discouraged and had serious doubts concerning recovery and my future.

Now, two months later, everything has changed. The pain is under control and gradually subsiding, I can stand and walk, and my outlook is completely positive. The dramatic change is 100% due to the outstanding care given to me by your staff at Prestonwood. Everyone with whom I came in contact was helpful, friendly, positive, caring, and contributive to my successful results.

In the stroke rehabilitation therapy program at Prestonwood Rehab, we are committed to providing a personalized, flexible treatment program for individuals who have been disabled by a stroke. Each person admitted to the program is evaluated by members of our rehabilitation team. A personalized stroke rehabilitation plan is designed to help the patient develop the skills needed to live as independently as possible after a stroke.

The plan created by our Physical and Occupational Therapists may include physical,  occupational and speech therapies, as well as other services like nutritional counseling.

Our inpatient program provides ongoing care and prepares the patient for a return home independently or with assistance from family members or other care providers.  We work as a coordinated team to assist the patient in:

  • Increasing self-care skills
  • Improving psychological adjustment
  • Improving self-image
  • Improving mobility, health and independence
  • Maximizing the ability to enjoy life
  • Preventing secondary complications

After a stroke, you can often regain most, if not all, of your previous functionality.  Through working with experienced therapists like those at Prestonwood Rehab, you can adjust to your treatment quickly and regain your mobility and independence at a pace that’s right for you.

Rehabilitation that is initiated soon after a stroke helps improve skills.  A great majority of patients who need to recover after a stroke are able to resume most of their activities and live active lives.
